Adventures in Good Eating
Duncan Hines might sound like a typical American brand name, but the man actually existed. Born in Kentucky in 1880, Hines worked as a travelling salesman.
Travelling the country Hines had the opportunity to dine at a great many restaurants and eating places. Over the years he and his wife Florence put together a comprehensive list of good places to eat which they sent to their friends. It proved so popular that Hines began selling the list as a paperback book called Adventures in Good Eating.
Next came a book on good places to sleep, a newspaper column and then, at last, actual food.
Duncan Hines introduced his own bread and after selling the rights to use his name to Roy Park, the first Duncan Hines cake mixes appeared, developed by Nebraska Consolidated Mills. Proctor & Gamble bought the cake mix business in 1957 and took it national, creating the huge success that is Duncan Hines cake mix today.
Duncan himself died in 1959 and is buried in his home town.
